Early winter is always an eventful season in the New York art community. This was particularly true in 1994. Among the many excellent artists who exhibited work at the Montserrat Gallery (SoHo), 584 Broadway, was Hollis Walsh Dorafshar.

Dorafshar imposed her inner vision on the outside sensory world when she painted and exhibited these works. “Out of the ordinary” best describes this innovative artist’s art.

Anchorman
Academic paint handling and brushwork done with descriptive colors enhance them. In general, her style is surrealistically representational.

“Anchorman”, which is very dark and expressive, is an exception. It is done low key in deep blue, near black, values. The mood is intense.

Pops in the Park
Fanciful realism best describes “Pops in the Park”. The setting is incongruous. Three musicians play string instruments on a wide expanse of well tended grass with distant trees in the background. They appear to be dressed in concert attire, although coatless and in shirtsleeves at the moment.

Mints Christmas
The principal figure in “Mints Christmas” is seemingly departing from the picture, only the head and shoulders remain visible. Viewers’ attention is progressively attracted to three widely divergent areas. This strange composition, however, is acceptable, regardless of disregarded rules.

Dorafshar’s art is unorthodox but her unique, novel compositions are successful, for they are created in balance, relationships and dominance.

Dorafshar’s instinctive, intuitive ability to make visual half-statements which pique one’s curiosity is uncanny.
